What is EPDM?

What is EPDM?

Firstly, if you are unsure what EPDM is then here is in depth information on exactly what EPDM is, and why it is becoming so popular when it comes to Roofing.

Its simple, EPDM is a Rubber. EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. EPDM is a type of synthetic rubber that has an elastomer which is characterized by a wide range of applications.

E Ethylene
P Propylene
D Diene
M refers to its classification in ASTM standard D-1418.

EPDM is a "M" class rubber. M Class includes rubbers having a saturated chain of the polymethylene type.

Dienes, which are currently used in the manufacturing of EPDM Rubber are dicyclopentadiene, ethylidene norbornene (ENB), and vinyl norbornene (VNB).

Why Firestone EPDM is the best for Flat Roofs

The Ethylene content of most EPDM membranes on the marker is around 45% to 75%. The higher the ethylene within the Rubber Membrane, the higher the loading possibilities of the polymer. The dienes, normally ranging from 2.5% up to 12% by weight of the composition, serve as crosslinks when curing with sulphur and resin.

Ok, so a little too in depth? Let us make it simple for you.
